In the course, Orthopedics Across the Lifespan, virtual anatomy tables were integrated to enhance classroom instruction. Across the semester, students explored common orthopedic conditions and injuries spanning pediatrics, adolescence, adults, and older adults. The virtual anatomy tables facilitated comprehension by offering a three-dimensional visualization of anatomical structures and orthopedic injuries. Additionally, the interactive features of the virtual anatomy tables enabled students to utilize investigative tools such as x-ray and MRI views.

During each virtual anatomy lab session, students were organized into small groups to collaboratively tackle 6-8 orthopedic clinical cases. These cases, modeled on real-world scenarios, provided students with hands-on problem-solving experiences. Initially unaware of the specific orthopedic issues presented, students engaged in team-based problem-solving exercises. A structured worksheet accompanied the clinical cases, outlining the scenario and posing guiding questions. Subsequent to each clinical case session, a class discussion enriched students’ understanding of anatomy and orthopedic injuries by incorporating additional insights and context. These discussions served to deepen comprehension and foster collaborative learning among students.

"Following my first semester of Nutrition for the Health Sciences course, I wanted to provide students with a more interactive, hands-on experience for learning about the digestive tract, nutrition across the lifespan, and how disease impacts our bodies along with our nutrition. The SIM center staff met with me to brainstorm ideas, share what the virtual anatomy tables had to offer, provide demonstration and exploration on the virtual anatomy tables, and assist with putting together a schedule and plan for the semester. Rachel, Ariene, and Kevin made the transition to incorporating the virtual anatomy tables into the course seamless."

During the virtual anatomy lab sessions, which are a part of the enhancement portion of this course, students were able to actively engage with the digestive tract looking at each section, learning about its functions, and watch the pathway of food through the system. Each lab also provided students an opportunity to enhance their knowledge and being to develop professional dialogue by teaching someone else about how the digestive tract functions, nutritional needs/concerns through the lifespan, and how disease appears/presents in the body and in turn impacts our body’s function in regards to nutrition. The virtual anatomy tables provided another way for students to learn and engage with the material learned in class. The experience also provided students with the opportunity to collaborate with each other throughout the semester. Providing students with an opportunity to better prepare our students for collaborative interdisciplinary experiences in their future healthcare professions.

In our Kinesiology course, students focus on musculoskeletal anatomy, including the study of muscles, bones, bony landmarks, and nerves. The incorporation of virtual anatomy tables has significantly enhanced the learning experience by providing students with a realistic, hands-on view of anatomy through a virtual cadaver. To maximize this technology, we have developed specific assessments for each region of the body. During lab sessions, students are divided into small groups to practice these assessments using various interactive modes such as gaming, flashcards, or quizzes. Additionally, students are encouraged to utilize the virtual anatomy tables outside of class time to reinforce their learning through self-directed practice and mock practical exams created by the instructor.

The virtual anatomy tables have proven to be an effective tool for learning anatomy, offering a dynamic and engaging way for students to explore and understand anatomical structures. These tables have not only increased student engagement but have also led to measurable improvements in their anatomical knowledge. Students have expressed positive feedback about using the virtual anatomy tables, noting how much they enjoy using them compared to more traditional means of studying anatomy.
